Autism in Children

Autism,

we hear it on the news, we read it in magazines, we see it on the book shelves in the supermarket tabloids.  It's everywhere, increasing at alarming rates.

It is said as of this writing (October 2009) that 1 in 100 children are autistic.

This raises many questions.  Why, is the biggest one?  How will I know if my child is autistic?  What will I do?  What can I expect?

I am not here to tell a parent of an autistic child what to do, I am here to give guidelines and support and knowledge that I have received by working with autistic children for over 30 years.

If autism swoops into your life, it will be changed forever. But, increasing your awareness in every aspect of autism will insure a move forward to a child's brighter tomorrow.

On the positive side because the rate of autism has grown significantly over the last 10 years, so has the research and the help, and support groups.  Before the 1970's very little was known about autism.  Parents were blamed, and most professionals opted to put the child with autism in an institution to save them from bad parenting.

The entire world has advanced since then.  We have come a long way in the past 35 years, with many breakthroughs that have led to better programs, improved family coping skills, and professionals now agree that it is biology not "bad parenting" that cause the characteristics of autism.

In 1994 Federal and State laws changed.  This has lead to better identification, updated legislation, and new research into causes, treatments, biology and technology of autism.

There are books, DVDs, seminars, ideas and theories that continually pop up about Autism.

I recommend getting your hands on as much material as you can.

Here are some articles and ebooks to get you started.
