Speech and Language Flash Card Activities

Speech Therapy Fun: New Games for Old Flash Cards

Are you tired of playing the same old speech therapy games with the same old flash cards? I know that I have played Go Fish and Memory more times than I can count! Well, I finally decided that I could not hear, ‘I have a match’ or ‘Go Fish’ one more time!  So, I came up with a couple of speech and language flash card activities.

Wall Races

Materials: Tape or Sticky Tack, Flash Cards, Free Download

Before your students come to speech, print, laminate and cut out the goal cards from the free download.  Stick the goal cards up on a wall.  Make sure they are spread out, so that students can place multiple flash cards under each goal card.

Place the students on teams and give each team the same amount of cards.  I also recommend giving each team some sticky tack to place on the back of the cards as they put them on the wall.  This will eliminate prep time for you!

Have the teams race to place the cards in the right spots.  When they are finished, count up the number of correctly placed cards.  Have your students sit while you go through each card.  Have them ‘help you’ figure out which ones are correct and incorrect.  You can also have the students come up and fix the incorrect cards.  The team with the most correct, wins!

If you don’t want to have a race, divide the flash cards evenly between the students.  Have the students take turns placing the cards in the right spots on the wall.  Encourage the students to help each other and discuss the incorrect cards.

Bucket Games

Materials: Buckets (or anything that will hold cards), Flash Cards, Free Download

Print, laminate and cut out the goal cards from the free download.  Place the buckets on the ground with specific goal cards in front of each bucket.

You can use the buckets and play the same games as mentioned above with the wall games.  You can also try the ideas below!

1) Place all of the flash cards in a big, mixed up pile on the floor.  Have students take turns picking one card from the pile.  They must place the card in the correct bucket.  If they are correct, they get 1 point.  If they are incorrect, they have to put the flash card back on the floor and get back in line.  Once all of the cards are in the correct buckets, the student with the most points win!

2) Divide up and place all of the flash cards into all of the buckets.  Make sure that there are correct and incorrect cards in each bucket.  Have students take turns picking one card out one of the buckets.  The student has to tell you if the card was in the correct or incorrect bucket.  If the student is right, he/she gets to keep the card.  If the student is wrong, the card must be placed back in the bucket.  Keep playing until all of the buckets are empty.  The student with the most cards, wins!

Students love these games because they can get out of their seats and ‘play’!  Leave a comment below and tell me other ways that you have used flash cards!
